The most current map of Texas available from the University of Nebraska’s drought monitor shows how severe the current period of drought is. The question should be asked, how does this drought stack up against other great droughts throughout the history of Texas?
Using data collected from trees rings, scientists have determined that the most severe period of drought in Texas began in 1715.
It is widely considered that the great drought of the 1950s was the worst on record, but the most recent drought is catching up.
Texas climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon said that in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News that the recent drought rivals the 1950s era drought in intensity, but is still currently behind in duration.
The 1950s drought lasted over five years, but should the current cycle of drought continue, it could go on record as the worst in Texas history.
